Marcella was born in Dorohoi, Romania on May 16, 1991 moving to Auckland, New Zealand with her parents, Neil and Caroline when she was 10 days old.
In 1997/8 Marcella completed four modelling assignments for mail order company 'Creatures Everywhere' and retail shop 'Cosmos' in Parnell, Auckland.
Marcella picked up her first racquet at the age of 10. Neither parent had ever played tennis, but were persuaded by her school and friends to try her out. Within 12 months Marcella had won two 10 & Under girls tournaments. By September 2002 she had won her first 12 & Under tournament. In 2003 Marcella was the Milford Tennis Club Junior Girl Player of the Year.
Marcella went a private school on Auckland's North Shore, called Kristin School, starting at Preschool and going to Year 13. At 14 years old Marcella went to Spain. She is now training at the Barcelona Total Tennis Academy in Valldoreix, Barcelona.
